EAR RESHAPING AND EAR PINNING
Protruding ears are a source of embarrassment and mental anguish for many people, especially children. Treatment for protruding ears is a very common procedure. In the past few decades, thousands of individuals have been physically as well as psychologically helped through Otoplasty (a surgical procedure designed to correct this condition).
HOW IS OTOPLASTY/EAR PINNING PERFORMED?
There are several surgical procedures which are designed to bring the ears closer to the head. A basic procedure involves making an incision at the back of the ear to expose firm tissue called cartilage. The surgeon may either fold down the cartilage and use sutures to keep the folds together or will remove excess cartilage. After reshaping the cartilage, the incisions are closed with small sutures, and the ears are covered with bandages. Otoplasty can be performed under general anaesthesia in which the patient is put to sleep or under local anaesthesia in which the areas are numbed and the patient remains awake, but sedated and comfortable.
WHAT CAN BE EXPECTED FOLLOWING SURGERY?
Pain or discomfort connected with the surgery is controlled by medications. Head bands are to be worn over the ears for one week and a further two weeks when sleeping. You can wear a beanie or head scarf to cover to make you feel more comfortable if you wish. Scars from the incisions are, for the most part, inconspicuous because they are made within the crease behind the ears. Although patients are usually up and around one or two days after surgery, the decision as to when normal activities can be resumed is determined by the physician and is based on the extent of surgery and the patient’s healing process.
AT WHAT AGE SHOULD OTOPLASTY BE PERFORMED?
Otoplasty may be performed on anyone over the age of five or six years old when the ear growth is almost complete. However, if possible, it’s best to leave it until adulthood when the person can make up his or her own mind about the need for this procedure.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS INVOLVED WITH OTOPLASTY?
Each year, thousands of otoplasties are successfully performed. Although complications such as blood clots and infections following surgery are rare, possible risks should be thoroughly discussed with physician prior to surgery. Occasionally, a second procedure may be necessary if an ear begins to protrude again.
Cosmetic Nose Surgery
Just about everybody has heard the term “NOSE JOB” and a lot of people would have a fair understanding of just what a nose job is. The correct term for a nose job is Rhinoplasty, it is probably one of the most widely performed type of cosmetic surgery currently performed. It is a procedure of high impact and can make a profound difference to the appearance of a face once a patient has undergone the surgery. It may change the whole balance of the face, good rhinoplasty can improve one’s self confidence. Rhinoplasty can take the form of decreasing or increasing the size of the nose, changing the shape of the nose, narrowing the nose or changing the shape of the nostrils or a combination thereof.
Improving your appearance with Nose Reshaping Surgery
There is no doubt that Rhinoplasty can improve the appearance of the nose and enhance the balance of facial features, it can also be used to help correct structural defects which may cause breathing problems. The important thing to understand is what type of Rhinoplasty will be suit you and enhance rather than detract from the overall balance of the face. A good cosmetic surgeon will thoroughly discuss all your options to make sure you get the right procedure for you.
Is Nose Reshaping Surgery right for me?
Want to know if you’re a suitable candidate for Rhinoplasty, you need to be at least in your mid-teens (14-15 for females, slightly older for males). In other words the nose has to have matured to a point where it can be considered stabile. You need to have a realistic perception of what to expect from the Rhinoplasty procedure. You need to understand why you want to undergo Rhinoplasty. Norwood Day Surgery would take you through the consult process and give you the support you need to make an informed decision. |
