WHAT IS LIPODISSOLVE?
Lipodissolve refers to a nonsurgical method of body contouring as an alternative to liposculpture where SMALL deposits of fat are involved. Lipodissolve injections are based on a mixture of medications that are administered directly into the excess fatty deposits to initiate the breakdown of fat. Lipodissolve originated in Europe in the mid 90’s and was developed further in the United States and Latin America. It is proving to be a popular quick procedure that can be preformed in a short appointment here at Norwood Day Surgery.

WHAT IS THE SUBSTANCE USED IN LIPODISSOLVE?
The main component of Lipodissolve is Phosphatidylcholine, which is a natural compound produced from the soy bean. The body uses the same substance in a number of chemical pathways, including fat metabolism. It is licensed in Australia as a cholesterol dissolving agent so its fat dissolving use is off label.

To ensure a smooth reduction of the fat deposit, it is important to achieve an adequate and necessary concentration of Phosphatidylcholine in every part of the treated area, thus requiring a specific multi-injection technique. At the time of consultation Dr Marzola will calculate the required dosage per area and provide you with accurate pricing. The amounts of Phosphatidylcholine injected into one fat deposit range between 4 ml and 80 ml per application according to your individual needs.

IS LIPODISSOLVE FOR ME?
Both women and men who have small pockets or areas of stubborn fat or need to smooth out irregularities, are suitable for lipodissolve. It is a method of fine tuning body shape and repeated treatments are possible and necessary in some cases to achieve the best results. Areas such as upper abdomen, back ,lower legs or areas that have been treated before will be more fibrous and may need more treatments to dissolve the fat.

HOW IS IT DONE?
In our procedure room at Norwood Day Surgery, the area to be treated is photographed, marked out and cleaned. Multiple injections with a very fine needle are placed in the fat deposits. Very little discomfort is involved, a feeling similar to mosquito bites. A bandage or garment may or may not be necessary.

AFTERWARDS?
As the Phosphatidylcholine dissolves the fat cells, an inflammation takes place. Red, swollen, tender and bruised for a few days, then itchy as it settles in about one week. Depending on the size and location of the area treated and the healing process, 3 days to one week of discomfort but little to no time off work. Two months later we see you again and take the “after” photo.

COMPLICATIONS?
So far nothing serious. Other than the temporary inflammation described above, it is theoretically possible to have lumpy nodules, infections, abscess formation, pigmentation and allergic reactions in the injection areas. Allergy to soy bean is a contra-indication.

WHO ISN’T A CANDIDATE?
The absolute contraindications of fat reducing treatment include patient's age under 18 years, pregnant women, nursing mothers, certain diabetic patients and patients with current infections or patients suffering from severe immune deficiency disorders. You must declare any of these to your doctor along with any medications you are currently taking especially anticoagulants.
